メリーランド大学を中心とする研究グループの文化にかんする調査結果が、Science 誌 (27 May 2011)に発表された。その内容が新聞でも採り上げられている。
発表された論文のタイトルは
“Differences Between Tight and Loose Cultures: A 33-Nation Study”
である。著者として43名の名前が連なっている。
Tight: “have many strong norms and a high tolerance of deviant behavior”
Loose: “have weak social norms and a high tolerance of deviant behavior”
社会規範の強さ、逸脱行動にたいする寛容さによって文化の違いを識別しようとする試み。さまざまな質問項目(“kissing in a bank, eating in a classroom etc.”)に対する回答をもとにして、tightnessを導き出したという。
33ヶ国の中に、もちろん日本も含まれている。ちなみに日本は第8位に位置している。どんな国がtightなんだろう。
33ヶ国のrankingで上位10ヶ国は、以下のようになっていた。

3. India
4. Singapore
5. South Korea
6. Norway
7. Turkey
8. Japan
9. China
10. Portugal
この10ヶ国をながめていて、なんとなくわかる、という気分になれるでしょうか。
